A guide, not a guarantee
SafeRoute SA estimates where crime is concentrated from official SAPS police-station statistics, OpenStreetMap and population data, and adds what other people who use it say. These are estimates and opinions: a green area isn't guaranteed safe and a red one isn't always dangerous. Routes and warnings help you avoid known trouble; they can't see everything, and Google Maps or Apple Maps may take a different road between detour points. Stay alert, follow the rules of the road, and don't handle your phone while driving: plan before you go.
What people add
Ratings, marked places and reports are the honest opinions of the people who add them, and aren't checked one by one. They only show once several people agree. When you add something:
- say what you've seen or know, honestly;
- mark an area, never someone's home or a single building, and never name people;
- don't report things that aren't happening, or rate places to harm a business or a community.
We may remove anything that looks false, abusive or aimed at someone, and limit how much one phone or connection can add.
