Privacy
SafeRoute SA has no accounts and doesn't ask who you are. This page says what it does keep, why, and what you can ask for, in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Trips you plan
The start, stops, destination and route of a trip you plan are saved, so its link works when you share it. Anyone with the link can open the trip, so only share it with people you'd tell where you're going. Ask us and we'll delete a trip.
Accepting the route disclaimer
Before every trip, you accept that a route is a suggestion, not a guarantee of safety. Each time you do, we keep a record of it: the wording you accepted and when, the trip it was for, the random number your browser keeps for your phone, your internet address, your browser's description of itself (its "user agent") and language, and your screen size, time zone and the address of the page. This is the one place we keep your internet address itself. We keep it so we can show that the disclaimer was accepted if there's ever a dispute about a route, and we don't use it for anything else.
Ratings and reports
When you rate a place, a road, a suburb or a petrol station, or report something, we keep what you said, where and when. Your browser keeps a random number for your phone; we store only a scrambled (hashed) version of it, so one phone counts once and you can change or delete your own ratings. We also store a scrambled version of your internet connection, never the address itself, so one person can't pose as many. Ratings count for a year; reports for a day. Ratings are shown only as the average of at least 5 people (faintly from 2), never with anyone's details. Please mark areas, not someone's home, and never name people.
Your location
Your location is only used when you ask: Me fills in your start point, and Warn me on the way follows your position on your phone to warn you. The warnings work on your phone; your position isn't sent to us or kept.
Other services the site uses
- Map pictures come from OpenStreetMap's servers, and place search from Photon and Nominatim. They see your internet address and what you search for, like any website you visit.
- Usage counts (how many people plan a trip or add a rating) use our own Umami server: no cookies and nothing that identifies you.
- Error reports, if switched on, go to Sentry without personal details.
- Bot checks, if switched on, use Cloudflare Turnstile when you save a rating; Cloudflare looks at signals from your browser to tell people from bots.
- The site runs on Railway; like any web server it logs requests (including internet addresses) for a short time, to keep it running and safe.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it: email us with the trip link, or the ratings you mean. Since there are no accounts, we may ask for the trip link or for you to use My ratings on the same phone. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za).
